Overview:
IPD has long relied upon speed, hardened armor, and aggressive close range combat to
overwhelm opposing forces before they can properly respond. The Heffalump was created to
provide a simple answer to this doctrine.

"If a Tier's fixin' to charge, just shoot it."

The Heffalump is a dedicated anti-armor platform built around a simple philosophy. A large
weapon, a strong shell, and a crew willing to wait will defeat most problems given enough
    time.

Unlike the rare Wunderwaffe that dominate military procurement discussions, the Heffalump is
a practical machine. It is inexpensive enough to be deployed in numbers, reliable enough to
remain in service for generations, and dangerous enough that the enemy must respect every
battlefield where one may be present.

Capabilities:
The primary weapon of the Heffalump is an improved Heavy Gauss Rifle paired with a targeting
computer. This combination provides exceptional accuracy at extended ranges and retains the
ability to defeat even the hardened armor common among IPD assault formations.

The Heffalump was developed specifically in response to IPD Asymptote-class assault Mechs.
While such machines are exceptionally resistant to conventional battlefield threats, a
properly placed Heavy Gauss round remains capable of catastrophic damage. The Heffalump does
not need to win a prolonged engagement. It only requires one successful shot.

Protection is provided by 16.5 tons of reactive armor. This level of protection was
considered excessive by some, until combat analysis demonstrated the value of surviving the
missile and artillery fire that typically precedes an IPD armored assault.

Four light machine guns provide all-around infantry protection. Unlike many vehicles that
carry limited ammunition supplies for machine guns, the Heffalump carries a full ton of
ammunition. The systems are intended for rapid fire, sacrificing ammunition efficiency for
    immediate battlefield effect.

The Heffalump is not intended to chase enemy formations -- it is intended to wait until they
come close enough to regret finding it.

Deployment:
The Heffalump is deployed primarily in defensive positions, ambush zones, and hardened
approach corridors where enemy armored formations are expected to advance. Its turretless
configuration is not considered a weakness. The Heffalump does not maneuver for advantage.
It establishes the advantage before the engagement begins.

Reichssphare commanders frequently deploy Heffalump units in mutually supporting positions,
creating overlapping fields of fire that force enemy formations to either engage prepared
defenses or alter their advance routes.

IPD analysts have repeatedly described the Heffalump as predictable due to its limited
mobility and simple design. Reichssphare crews generally consider this assessment useful.

    A Heffalump is large.
    A Heffalump is stubborn.
A Heffalump is also surprisingly sly.

The first indication that an enemy formation has entered a Heffalump engagement zone is
usually the sudden loss of an expensive assault unit.

Notable MechWarriors:
    HEF-3 "Stubborn Bastard"

During the defense of Tal-212, HEF-003 survived multiple artillery impacts while engaging a
superior IPD armored formation. The vehicle destroyed several attacking units before
suffering mobility damage and being forced into a static defensive position.

The crew continued operating the vehicle until relieved.

When questioned why they had not abandoned the damaged Heffalump, the commander reportedly
    responded:

"Abandon? Nein. Track was busted. Kanone still worked. Feind was still there. Reckon it'd be
mighty rude to leave the party."
