Variants:
Derived from the Manticore heavy tank, the Chimaera outwardly appears as almost an exact
twin of that vehicle, but possesses many differences if you look closer. The fusion core of
the Manticore has been replaced by a lighter fuel cell engine, which can still drive the
tank to over 60 kph at flank speeds, but the removal of the fusion core also required
replacing the energy weapon on the design. As it could no longer mount the formidable
particle cannon or laser weapons used for centuries on the older machine, an equally
formidable dual purpose autocannon was placed in the turret. Fed by two tons of munitions,
this autocannon allows the crew to pick between solid slugs and cluster shot as the need
arises. Backing this weapon are the ever-popular 10 rack of long-range missiles, now fed by
its own two tons of reloads), and the six pack of short-range missiles with its own ton of
reloads. The front body mounted medium laser was also replaced, with a shorter-range, but
versatile vehicle flamer, which allows attacks versus hard targets and provides
anti-infantry defense as needed. A ton of fuel for this weapon ensures battlefield
longevity. All ammunition stores are protected in CASE-lined bays, and the tank itself has a
decently thick skin of heavy ferro-fibrous armor. Many units are working to obtain
quantities of this new tank as border wars start to heat up once again in the Inner Sphere.
