Overview:
The PCM-15I Personal Combat Mobile is an individually operated, armed casemate tankette. No
larger than a commercial truck, it boasts an unusually spacious interior compared to the
cramped interior of conventional tanks. The vehicle was originally conceived as a pension
reward for retired veterans choosing a quiet life on the Periphery frontier. While slow by
modern combat standards, the tankette is exceptionally well protected, dedicating one third
of its total mass to standard grade armor. Its role is that of an ambusher rather than a
brawler. Rather than give chase, the PCM-15I is built to sit still, hull down at the edge of
a homestead, and commit its two forward mounted small lasers only once a threat has closed
to killing range. Despite its tracked drivetrain, the vehicle rides on rubber shod track
shoes. Paired with its modest fifteen ton weight, this spares civilian roads the wear that
military tracks typically inflict, so a veteran can run into town for supplies without
chewing up the pavement.
At the heart of the vehicle is a rugged, 60 rated internal combustion engine that gives the
PCM-15I a modest top speed of 64.8 km/h. It runs on diesel rather than a more volatile fuel,
a deliberate choice that keeps the vehicle safe to store and operate through the long,
uneventful stretches between the rare moments it sees combat. An extended fuel tank
stretches its range well beyond a standard tankette's, suited to the wide distances between
depots on most Periphery worlds. The hull is finished in a distinctive silvery grey
photovoltaic coating that trickle charges the vehicle's life support amenities independently
of the main powerplant, letting the operator shut the notoriously noisy engine down entirely
during passive downtime and keep the interior quiet and livable while saving fuel. Those
amenities, a reclining operator's seat that doubles as a bunk, a small atmospheric condenser
that converts ambient humidity into drinkable water, and a specialized suction commode that
flash dries waste into compact cartridges for safe disposal, are held within an insulated
cargo compartment alongside survival rations and personal stowage.
The PCM-15I is issued as part of a broader State pension package. Every unit carries a
lifetime entitlement to three free repairs and half price diesel refueling at any municipal
depot owned by the State, provided the vehicle is signed in by its rightful owner. This
entitlement passes down with the vehicle itself, inherited in turn by the veteran's spouse,
child, or nominated benefactor.
