Though the Highlander 733P comes close, the Banshee BNC-3S is arguably the best Assault Mech of the Succession Wars, bar none. -------- It doesn't have LRMs, so it lacks the range of some Mechs. Neither does it have to knockout punch of an Autocannon 20. It's a 3/5, meaning its slower than some, and faster than none. And for a 95ton Battlemech, 15tons of armor is very average to somewhat mediocre level of protection. So given all these disadvantages, what is it that recommends the BNC-3S so much? Two main reasons.
The first reason is sheer. Direct. Firepower. Two Particle Projection Cannons, an Autocannon 10, and enough heat sinks to maintain the same 3-2-3 firing rate as the Awesome. Only the Awesome can match the Banshee's concentrated punch out to medium and long range. Though, the Awesome's 3rd PPC means it actually has an edge in range and in disregard for ammo. Why should the BNC-3S be considered better than the classic Awesome 8Q?
The second reason is a *fantastic* battery of support weapons. 4 Medium Lasers, 2 Small Lasers, and an SRM-6 launcher. Unlike the Awesome, the Banshee 3S can EXPLOIT the damage it does at range, hole-punching then crit-hunting. Once the distance has closed, it can fire everything but the PPCs and remain heat neutral but for movement. There's more to single the Banshee out for though.
A mere 3 tons of total ammo means it's much less prone to ammo explosions than many of its counterparts. It weapons are well-distributed too, so much so that it remains dangerous even after the loss of a side torso. And the Banshee platform is an **incredibly** common design. Thousands survived the fires of the Succession War, making the base Banshee more numerous than any other Assault Mech. Combining that with its bad reputation means that you can frequently buy the base model for rather cheap, putting the savings towards refitting to the BNC-3S variant. -------- Some Assault Mechs are faster or more mobile. Some are much better protected. But few can weather the fire the Banshee can deal in return. |

This is what an assault mech should be: not fast but heavy armor (even if it´s not maxed) and brutal firepower at good ranges. The weapon placement is a bit odd but you will have to take some real huge damage before your firepower decreases. With a bit finetuning I would give it a 5 (replace 1t SRM ammo and the small lasers with armor and or heatsink(s)). |

What is not to like about this mech? Well armored for the time, Heavy long range firepower, Good short range firepower, Good heat dissipation, average speed for the class. This is one of the mechs that can single handedly change a battle. One of the best designs for the era. |

Oooooh, yeah...same heat curve, speed, and armor coverage as an Awesome, but enhanced physical attack power, versatility, and close range weaponry. This Banshee, the 3S, is a classic example of traditional Lyran thinking, and traditional Lyran thinking done WELL. Though it may lack the range of the Awesome, it features a similar heat profile when launching attacks with the autocannon and paired PPCs. At close range, the design just gets scarier, keeping the autocannon thundering at you while adding four mediums and an SRM launcher of massive size. The firepower, it's beautiful...
The design could be improved of course, but mostly through advanced technology. Myself, I think removing the small lasers for more leg/arm armor is a good idea, but your mileage may vary. Overall, I'd take one of these Banshee BNC-3S machines into battle against an Atlas AS7-D any day. And I'd probably come out ahead.
Finally...the psychological weapon the Banshee had always been meant to be. |

Not exactly a Banshee as we know it,but it has the signature small laser and then another one... hmm that's strange. Maybe that the Lyrans fused two banshees to one design, or the 3S is a product of a Clash of the Titans (the BNC charged some other 'Mech and the techs were unable to remove the smaller machine and so the BNC-3S was born!). Whatever the origin of this machine is, the fact is that it's one of the most dangerous assaults around 3025. AC and two PPC can match the damage output of the Awesome (shorter range of the AC is offset by higher rate of fire) and at short range it can match the Battlemaster, and without heat problems. Use as a bracket fighter and you'll see the enemy cover in fear. Armor and speed are just standard, but that can't change the fact that this is either a terrible opponent or devastating weapon in your hands. |
