Overview:
It has been claimed for centuries that Corean Enterprises designed the Centurion and the
Trebuchet to be partners. The misfortunes of war and time have made this a rare occurrence,
but when they are together the difference in mobility does crop up. The Centurion is
designed as a trooper mech, but has it has very finite limits to the ammunition. While the
combo of Corean mechs can work, the lack of both speed and combat endurance has long
hampered the Centurion.
We found a mech that might have fixed that. While fundamentally similar to the CN9-AL, this
machine is a somewhat unique take on that configuration which some consider to be someone
oversunk.
Salvaged in the Free World League by then-Captain Miguel Szabo-Nguyen in 2997. Ironically,
he was piloting his family's Trebuchet Gabriel when he engaged the fleeing Davion volley
after volley of LRMs. With the armour stripped, the Centurion finally fell due to engine
hits. On the ancient principle of "keep what you kill", rather than parting it out for
immediate sale he arranged to have it transported to his family holdings on the other side
of the League. Along with the engine, his LRMs had cracked the gyro, and by some miracle the
cannon ammo hadn't cooked off when the reloading hatch was blown off.
One of the advantages that Szabo-Nguyen had was that his family had been hording parts for
their Trebuchet. Corean had intentionally kept many common small parts, myomer bundles and
actuators. What they didn't have was replacement parts for the autocannon, nor a 200-rated
engine. But they did have a 250-class engine, and Corean's mounting brackets were identical
on the two 50-ton designs. And the same gyro. The problem was that it was fifty percent
heavier than the old engine. There was only two places the weight could be found.
The technicians of the Szaabo-Nguyen household looked at the LRM and apparently didn't give
it a second glance. What they could do was remove the autocannon. The weapon and it's
ammunition are nearly a third of the machine's total weight. The family legend is that they
spent three years trying to source a particle cannon. It is often observed that Marik space
has a shortage of those, but it does have plenty of quality large lasers. While the Magna Mk
III large laser offers slightly less damage than the AC/10, it has similar range and no
ammunition issues.
The change in primary weapon fit the mech four tons underweight. The obvious answer was to
put in more armour- ten total tons of StarSheild gives the machine the type of protection
one associates with Hunchbacks and heavy mechs. A Magna Mk I small laser was mounted under
the large laser for anti-infantry use. And two more heatsinks were mounted in the right
torso. Further changes included replacing the original medium lasers with a pair of Magna Mk
IIs, as the parts are readily available in the FWL and the design is widely known by the
FWLM technical corps. Similarly, the LRM rack was swapped for the FWL made Zeus LRM-10 which
is used on on their jump jet equipped Trebuchets as well as Szabo-Nguyen's personal mech.
This ensures that nothing used on this mech is, literally or cognively, foreign to anyone
who would work on it.
It should be noted that this month's This Old Mech is in a way a two-for-one. The
Szabo-Nguyen Trebuchet, dubbed Gabriel, has replaced the arm mounted LRM-15 with an LRM-10.
The saved weight allows for a second ton of ammunition for the LRM-15, and the carriage of a
ton of extra armour, to improve endurance and survivability.
As he approached retirement, Major Szabo-Nguyen switched to the Centurion which had been
dubbed Sariel. After three years, the Major shifted to staff work. But that does not mean
that the family mechs are collecting dust. The Major's twin daughters, Mikaela and Daniela,
now pilot Gabriel and Sariel. The two have shown the potential of Corean's combination, with
the sisters leapfrogging from cover to cover and proving each other with supporting fire.
How they have been able to stay together for the last eight years is a mystery, but they
have done so. What is not a mystery is why they've not been promoted- they are not only
physically identical, but identical attitude problems. With a history of being on report for
petty infractions and the occasional insubordination, they have been transferred (together)
several times. If they can ever move past their difficulty with regulations, they'll be
instantly promoted to lance leaders, which would separate them. The only reason they are not
in mercenary service is on three occasions they've been the survivors of lances that lost
their machines. In a fourth engagement, their battalion and an attached mechanized infantry
battalion lost half of the troops and APCs and half the mechs in three hours. The
Szabo-Nguyen twins smashed the enemy's ammo and coolant trucks, then rallied their
surviving comrades to fall back to the dropships. Despite being rewarded and promoted for
their leadership and valor, they were immediately demoted for destroying rather than
attempting to capture the same coolent trucks and ordering the destruction of the material
their raid was to seize, along with civilian infrastructure in the form of several
communications relays and an electrical switching station. They are currently assigned to
their regiment's recon lance.
Based on this very limited sample, properly developed tactical doctrine for these designs
could see Corean's dreams realized. This configuration, which When we look at the original
Trebuchet, the lightweight 300-class engine would save enough weight to add 120m's
worth of jump jets. Switching to the SLDF's lost heat sinks, increased ammunition or heavier
weapons enhance their lethality. With the kinds of speeds one associates with recon unit,
heavier armour and firepower would turn the Centurion/Trebuchet duo into fast
reinforcements, heavy recon, highly mobile fire support, or swift flankers for assault
companies. In short, superior trooper mechs, the main force of any force.
Ignoring the partnership and focusing on the Centurion, this configuration opens up a lot of
new opportunity to the for the Centurion. While an argument could be made for swapping the
large and small lasers and some of the armour for a PPC, the choice to use a energy based
primary eliminates that lack of endurance for the Centurion.
