Variants:
During the buildup of their forces for the alliance with Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Hell’s
Horses leadership required that their scientists develop new models of the various armored
vehicles within their ranks, making them better able to deal with foes on the modern
battlefields of the Dark Age. When examining the Ares medium tank, it was decided to
increase the accuracy of its main weapon, the turret-mounted extended-range large laser by
giving it a targeting computer, and to switch the long-range missile launchers for
advanced-tactical missile launchers. However, given the required mass increase of the
ATM’s vs LRM’s, the new design either had to live with much smaller batteries of the
newer missiles, or switch out the fusion core for an extralight model. Clan scientists went
with the latter choice, but even so, the size of the launchers was still less than they
really wanted, and as well, they could not increase the armor protection of the design as
intended either. However, the flexibility of the new launchers was seen as more important,
and they proceeded with the largest launchers they could still accommodate with minimal
other changes. Five tons of missiles are carried for the pair of launchers; most often
devoted to two tons each of extended range and standard munitions, and only one ton of high
explosive missiles.
