When a full battalion of XNT-30 Xanthos were donated to the SLDF’s 81st Mechanized
Infantry Division, they had little realization that Star League engineers would study the
design and implement their own model for the Royal units. Designates the XNT-SLb, this model
Xantos would take what came before and build on it, making a truly formidable 100 ton
BattleMech.
Initially, serious consideration was given to providing the machine with a massive Type 400
extralight fusion core to provide a top speed of some 64 kph, but it was determined that
this would require too many reductions in either the planned armaments package or in the
thickness of the armor plate. Therefore, the standard Vlar 300 fusion core was retained, but
the 23 single heat sinks were replaced with almost 10 tons less in double-strength models.
Although this reduced the total number of heat sinks, it actually boosted the overall
effectiveness of the heat dissipation system by almost 25 percent. This allowed the Star
League’s engineers to provide a formidable armaments package of an extended/range particle
cannon in the left torso, and a formidable Gauss rifle, fed by 4 tons of slugs, in the right
torso. Backing these two powerful long-range guns at shorter ranges are an array of laser
and missile systems, consisting of pairs of standard medium lasers and medium pulse lasers
and a trio of small pulse lasers for anti-infantry defense. One of the medium pulse lasers
is rear-mounted, while two of the small pulse lasers share this arrangement. A Holly four
rack of short-range missiles fed by a ton of reloads seeks out breaches in the armor of this
machine’s enemies. Both the missiles and the Gauss rifle are each protected by the
advanced CASE system, while a sophisticated Guardian ECM system protects the BattleMech from
detection from many electronic threats. Combined, these features made this machine a deadly
threat on the battlefield for its enemies.
