On the battlefield, what is your preferred missile launcher type?
I’m specifically thinking in the IlClan era, but if you’re considering otherwise, please state which one.
I’m also really interested in people’s thoughts of which is better between the clan ATM launchers vs the Inner Sphere’s MML launchers.

I'm a sucker for Streak SRMs. Being able to crit seek without rolling pesky cluster rolls makes them my favorite, especially when one hit with a SSRM 6 is 12 pips. _________________ "The 3Cr, we don't talk about the 4D""It may not be the best, but it's mine"

ATM and iATM are superior to MMLs in almost every way. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

IATM’s are a homeworld-clan and I guess Scorpion thing only to my knowledge.
As to regular ATM’s vs MML’s, the extended range ATM’s do have longer reach than long-range missiles; I’ll grant you that. And the high explosive ATM’s do more damage per missile than SRM’s.
But standard ATM’s don’t have the variants that LRM’s and SRM’s have, which give you options.

The BV discount on ATMs is greater then it is on MMLs.
That being said, I like MMLs more for their utility. ATMs can do damage. MML's can be used to prevent damage, light things on fire, shoot around hills, discourage movement options, go crit fishing, commit war crimes, etc. Being able to draw from all the SRM and LRM ammo types gives a lot more options.

ATMs are neat and all, but I honestly prefer bog-standard clan LRMs.
A Clan LRM 20 is 5 tons, same as an ATM 9 and similar to a MML 7 (4.5 tons)
For versatility it's a win, as unlike the mid and long range ATM munitions, or LRMs from a MML, there's no minimum range.
Sure, the ATM out-damages it with its shortest-range option, but the ATM is also forced to split its ammo types and hope it has enough of what it ends up wanting to use. A Clan LRM user just packs a few bins of its regular ammo and is good to go at all ranges.
MML wins some awards for all the varieties of IS special munitions it can muster, but for simple effectiveness (and less leafing through rules, pardon my green-ness to TW), I'll almost always go for clan LRMs.

I honestly have a major soft-spot for the enhanced LRM. Ironically, I've only made designs with it once or twice but the ability to engage at just about all ranges other than point blank, makes it an deceptively versatile weapon.
Slap some 'follow-the-leader' ammunition and you have a long range AC20. Use semi-guided and you turn every unit with a TAG into a major threat. Use enhanced thunder ammo and you can lock down entire grid coordinates.
Of course it depends on what your table allows but when I play with my buddies, we always go by "all pre-3081 equipment is allowed" rules with a couple optional rules (advanced ECM and ECCM, for example) sprinkled in.
Still, unless the table does not allow special ammunition, I will absolutely pick either the standard or enhanced LRM20. They might not be the most optimal choice but they fit my tactics enough to be worth the BV inefficiency. _________________ ~When the devil is caught by a monster then I, as a human being, can only hope that they both perish.

I am going to have to go with the standard SRM. Why? Because the PPC is my favorite weapon, whatever the variant. Follow those big long range hits up in any era with some crit seeking SRMs and one has a winning combo.
Give me a Warhammer 6K or deity forbid a Mad Dog A and you have a happy dragon of jade wrecking the battlefield.
I ran a mixed tech lance semi-recently.
- Mad Dog A
- Ostsol 4F
- Scorpion 1N
- Javelin 10N
And yes I loaded the odd weapon out, the LBX5, with clusters and made good use of my Doom Box! _________________ The JadeDragon
