Overview:
Developed by Kong Interstellar Corporation on Connaught in 3065, the
BL-7-KNT-LBWL was a Free Worlds League evolution of the earlier BL-7-KNT-L
field refit. Rather than reinvent the Black Knight, Kong sought to preserve the
chassis’ traditional strengths: heavy armor, a full energy-weapon battery, and
the ability to remain in combat without dependence on ammunition resupply.
The LBWL was also shaped by League industrial realities. Its Technicron
Standard internal structure was heavier than Endo Steel, but easier to
manufacture, repair, and distribute across federal and provincial maintenance
networks. Kong paired this conservative structure with a Vlar 300 Light Fusion
Engine, Triple Strength Myomer, and nineteen double heat sinks, producing a
rugged heavy BattleMech with a dangerous close-assault profile.
Capabilities:
The LBWL’s primary armament consists of three Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large
Lasers, backed by three Tronel II Medium Lasers, a Magna Mk.IV ER Small Laser,
and a Tronel I Small Laser. As with other Black Knights, the design remains
centered on energy weapons, but the LBWL’s weapon mix was selected as much for
heat control as for damage output.
At normal temperatures, the ’Mech advances at 43.2 km/h and can reach 64.8 km/h
at full speed. Once its TSM is active, its speed rises to 54.0 km/h walking and
86.4 km/h running, making the 75-ton machine surprisingly fast in the final
approach. The added mobility allows the LBWL to bring its five-ton hatchet into
play, where active TSM turns it into a devastating finishing weapon.
The machine carries 224 points of Valiant Lamellor standard armor. While not
quite maximum protection for the chassis, it is sufficient for its role,
especially when combined with standard structure, a Light Fusion Engine, and
the absence of ammunition. The main drawback is the lack of jump jets, which
limits the LBWL in broken terrain unless supported by other elements.
Battle History:
Early FWLM trials emphasized heat discipline. Pilots found that the LBWL could
fight effectively as a conventional laser-heavy Black Knight, but its true
value appeared when heat was deliberately managed to activate TSM during the
final approach.
In exercises, LBWLs used their ER Large Lasers to pressure enemy units at
range, then increased heat through controlled medium-laser fire before closing.
Once the myomer engaged, the Black Knight’s sudden increase in speed often
surprised opposing pilots who expected a slower heavy. In urban and restricted
terrain, the hatchet gave the design a brutal advantage against enemy heavies
unable to disengage.
Deployment:
The FWLM adopted the BL-7-KNT-LBWL in limited numbers for heavy command lances,
defensive reserves, and elite provincial formations. Kong promoted the design
as a practical League upgrade: easier to maintain than more exotic Endo Steel
refits, more survivable than XL-engine conversions, and less demanding
logistically than ammunition-fed heavy BattleMechs.
By the late 3060s, the LBWL had earned a reputation as a pilot’s machine. In
inexperienced hands it was merely another powerful Black Knight. In disciplined
hands, it became a fast-closing heavy brawler able to soften targets with laser
fire and finish them at close range with a TSM-driven hatchet strike.
